Behind the scenes
Fin Design + Effects was commissioned by Glowy Films to produce VFX and a CG Cheetah for launch of the new Mazda 6 Atenza into the Chinese market.
Shot in the South Island of New Zealand, Fin’s team of 3D artists, designers, and compositors added particle effects to build parts of the environment and car. The CG cheetah running alongside the Mazda also dissipates into particles as the car races off into the Milford Sound.
Due to the tight turn around of only 3 weeks post production and the large number of shots requiring FX, we created a flexible particle rig that answered the creative brief required over the majority of the TVC. Using a cloth simulation that was driven by a ‘peel off’ animation, we wrote a custom plugin for Maya to allow those particles to magically disappear into the surface.
Composite then pulled the many particle passes together to fully realise and unify the concept of the Mazda 6 being formed – and forming the environment. Our compositors also manipulated the locations to create another worldly place for the Mazda 6 emancipation to take place by generating and adding intoxicating waterfalls, skies, lakes and vegetation.
